Co-curricular activities at Trinity Grammar School (TGS) are essential to growing ‘well-rounded’ boys, building boys’ self-confidence and further enhancing their connectedness to the School.

The School is seeking to appoint a number of talented and passionate Debating Coaches to coach year round.


TGS prides itself on the inclusive nature of the Debating Program. Not only do we have a successful program for our advanced debaters, we also promote development and encourage participation for all students. The role of the Debating Coach at TGS will include:

  • Facilitating and aiding in selection trials for debating teams;
  • Coaching and management of the respective debating team(s) during the CAS, ISDA or FED seasons;
  • Offering guidance and mentorship to all debaters and collaborating with other coaches in order to promote interest in the activity as well as improving the standard of debating at TGS; and
  • Strengthening connections to the wider debating community. The Debating Coach reports directly to the Debating & Public Speaking Co-ordinator (or the Lead Debater in his/her absence).

Key Responsibilities: 

Selection Trials

  • Evaluate the performance of debaters during selection trials including a feedback process which consists of providing advice and guidelines before the start of trials to students and offering verbal feedback to students during the trial/s process; 
  • Provide written feedback and team recommendations to Debating & Public Speaking Co-ordinator.

Manage and Coach an assigned Debating Team

  • Develop and follow a training plan appropriate for the age and skill level of debater;
  • Attend all training sessions required for coaches;
  • Provide feedback to students that is supportive, encouraging and specific in how to make improvements in performance;
  • Attend all respective assigned CAS, ISDA and FED debates; and
  • Provide regular oral and written feedback to the Debating & Public Speaking Co-ordinator on results and individual performance of the team.

Support the wider Debating Community

  • Promote a culture of respect, fairness and humility;
  • Provide workshops or training seminars to beginning and experienced debaters;
  • Write and submit an end-of-season report;
  • Attend School debating functions; and
  • Undertake other duties related to supporting programs as may be required from time to time or by negotiation with the School.

Essential Skills and Requirements

  • Background in Debating (School and/or University level);
  • Adjudication Qualifications or the willingness to attend the relevant courses and receive accreditations is desirable;
  • Experience in coaching debating teams is desirable;
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents and students;
  • Experience in the performance arts of Speech and Drama is desirable, e.g., completion of speech and drama exams or participation in speaking and debating competitions - Plain English, Premiers Debating, Rostrum, Lions Voice of Youth.

Debating meetings are generally held once a week after school. Competitions are usually held on a Friday night each week, at various venues around Sydney. Candidates must be able to commit to attending competitions at these times for the duration of the season and be available to conduct weekly training sessions. Remuneration is competitive and based on experience.
